{214} "L'Adieu à Gbehanzin" A.Coffi & Poly-Rythmo ♫ +++

Late song from discography of Poly-Rythmo, working here with Adjaho G. Coffi.Mix of voodoo sounds and a likely pop tune, typical of the 80's ...
I guess the song tells the story of the farewell speech of Gbêhanzin, 11th King of Abomey, who lived from 1844 to 1906, I could not find it but in French at: http:// www.epa-prema.net/abomey/pedago/discours.htm

There is a part of his biography that made me laugh though:

"The troopers called him 'Beak of zinc'. His personal emblem is an egg, a shark and two coconut tree, his name means "the egg of the world or the son of the shark". A great lover of French wines, his  cellar  made the good fortune of the troops occupying his palace  "

I love the rare passages in french which punctuate sometimes Poly-Rythmo's songs and it contains one at 04:10 ...
"The shark went. But the son of the shark does not betray "

It symbolizes the Gbêhanzin's refusal to leave his homeland in the hands of foreign colonialists and asks  his Beninese  descendants to do likewise.

I think this album has been posted somewhere but here's one interesting excerpt!
